In late October of 2019 I did a great camping trip with a friend in
the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, a place called Dolly Sods,
located in the Monongahela National Forest. We did the trails in the
southern part of the park, starting at Red Creek. Went a bit "off
trail" early on during the trip as we kept exploring the campsites, of
which there are many! First night we camped by the river, near where
we had to cross the next monring to get on the Big Stonecoal trail.
It was great sleeping by the river, and the stars were beautiful at
night. Next morning we crossed the river, during which the current
took one of my flip flops away :( Then we hiked all the way to the
top, left our backpackss and went to explore the beautiful lookouts by
Lion's Head. We had the place all to ourselves and relaxed for a bit.
Heading back we saw some nice waterfalls and ended up at another
beautiful campsite by a smaller creek, with a sandy beach. We decided
to stay here for the night and then head down along the Little
Stonecoal trail back to the Red Creek trail. It was a great loop with
a fair bit of elevation (~300m). This is a really nice place worth
exploring, with tons of amazing campsites!
